Canadian Bird Toys
- Care and Hygiene Let's
begin with some basic information about feeding. Just like us, birds
like a little variety in their diet. Here's how to provide it:
Start with a basic avian formulated
diet, there are mixtures
for budgies, cockatiels all the way up for the big parrots such as
cockatoos and macaws. You can make a mix of 60% formulated pellets
(we call them crunchies…sounds yummier!) with a fresh seed mix or
have them separate dishes. Whatever you bird seems to prefer. We also supplement our birds diet with Avivita Plus Multivitamins.
All psittacines (a generic term for parrots) need fresh fruit daily
(pieces of apple, orange, grapes and banana) and vegetables (carrot,
broccoli, parsley, corn) Anything with lots of colour have loads of
fresh vitamins. Avigreens is a great way to ensure your bird is getting the vitamins it needs. A teaspoon provides the equivalent of a bowl of fresh veggies.
Always wash any fruit and vegetables beforehand with a natural vegetable
wash to remove insecticides and dirt. Birds do not have the same tolerance
levels for these chemicals as we do.
Other foods that you can try on your bird include cooked peas and
sweet potato/yams, cooked pasta or rice, unsweetened cereals (e.g.,
Shredded Wheat), and bread (watch them go nuts over the 12 grain variety). For our Grey we add Aviglo to her toast because it makes her skin and feathers look great, plus she loves it!
Sweetpea loves the Birdie
Bread that we make for her; it’s loaded with tons of
good things and is yummy too!
Most birds enjoy the occasional Millet spray. Additionally, Cuttlefish
and fresh drinking water should always be available.
That last one bears repeating. Fresh water is very important for your
bird. Don't skimp on it. In hot weather drop in an ice cube or two
if you are gone for a while, this will keep your birds water fresher
longer.

We cannot overemphasize
the importance of a clean cage!
Why? Because birds molt and (let's face it) they're messy!
Not just feathers, but dust, bacteria, and about 90% of what they
try to eat.
Their food spoils after 2-3 hours. This can cause bacteria as well
as attract insects or flies

|
Clean the cage daily,
changing paper and wiping down perches and bars with a non-toxic cleanser
such as Aviclean
|
|
|
Once a month, dismantle
the cage if possible and scrub, spray, wipe everything down with a
nontoxic cleanser. We use Pet Focus Disinfectant to kill any germs and bacteria.

Your bird will love
you for it! Everybody likes a clean house. |
